A brain injury in childhood can cast a very long shadow. Because the young brain is still developing, an early TBI can quietly impair memory, attention, and learning well into adulthood — often without the person or their doctors connecting today’s struggles to an injury from decades earlier. This matters because these hidden deficits affect education, employment, and quality of life for a lifetime.
This study is significant because it asked whether that damage is still treatable many years later.
Researchers followed 26 adults who had suffered a TBI before age 17 and only began HBOT as adults — on average more than 23 years after the injury. Each received at least 40 sessions of 90 minutes at 2.0 ATA (100% oxygen with air breaks).
Afterward, they showed statistically significant gains across nearly every cognitive domain: global cognition, memory, executive function, attention, and processing speed. Strikingly, the benefit did not depend on how long ago the injury occurred or how severe it had been — powerful evidence that the brain can remain responsive to this therapy even decades down the road. <view study>
